Analysis of Garnet by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy—Two Practical Applications

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a simple and straightforward technique of atomic emission that can provide multi-element detection quantification in any material, in-situ real time because all elements emit the 200–900 nm spectral range LIBS optical emission. This study evaluated two practical applications LIBS—validation labels assigned to garnets museum collections discrimination LCT (lithium-cesium-tantalum) NYF (niobium, yttrium fluorine) pegmatites based on garnet geochemical fingerprinting, both which could be implemented site or field setting with handheld analyzer. Major element compositions were determined using electron microprobe analysis for suite 208 from 24 countries determine type. Both commercial laboratory analyzers then used acquire broadband spectra chemometrically processed by partial least squares discriminant (PLSDA) linear support vector machine classification (SVM). High attribution success rates (>98%) obtained PLSDA SVM data suggesting assign type quickly accurately. also identifies changes composition associated increasing mineral chemical complexity pegmatites.
